The 2015 SADC Peoples Summit
As the Heads of State will be meeting in Botswana for the 2015 Heads of State and Government Summit, the ordinary peoples of Southern Africa will also converge at the Big Five in Gaborone, Botswana from 15th – 16th August, 2015, under the auspices of the Southern Africa Peoples Solidarity Network (SAPSN).
THEME
This year’s Summit is expected to bring together participants from community–based groups, Social Movements and Civil Society Organizations from all corners of the region, under the theme “Reclaiming SADC for People’s Development: SADC Resources for SADC People…”
AGENDA
Tentatively, the following are under consideration as broad thematic issues on the agenda for 2015 SAPSN People’s Summit, subject to maximum support and stakeholder interest:
1. Tax Justice and the fight against Illicit Financial Flows;
2. Labor Rights, Decent Jobs and Employment; 3. Economic Empowerment and Development Freedoms;
4. Human Security (Violence, Peace Building and Human trafficking);
5. Financing for Post 2015 Sustainable Development Goals agenda (Health, Education and Agriculture);
6. Trade: Cross border traders (Harassment, Simplified trade regime, Double tax);
7. The threat of Unsustainable Debt in SADC Countries
8. Governance, Democracy and Human Rights (Elections, Civic participation and Development)
9. Youths; Employment and Empowerment as the hope for SADC.
10. Climate change
The Peoples’ Summit is a people’s platform to share experiences, map out strategies and build solidarity around common challenges and common solutions that should help shape our future and our destiny. Key outputs from The Summit deliberations will include, but not be limited to the SADC Peoples’ Declaration being submitted to the SADC Heads of State and disseminated throughout the SADC Focal points of the member countries in the region as we help operationalised the ideals and best practices for the SADC region.
