ESAFF Annual Report 2022

Throughout the reporting period, ESAFF’s endeavors centered around four pivotal result areas outlined in the ESAFF Strategic Plan 2016-2026. To actualize the program’s overarching goal, the Forum dedicated its efforts to specific key result areas. These areas include: firstly, advocating for the implementation of the Malabo Declaration by governments and institutions in eastern and southern Africa through Public Expenditure Tracking Systems (PETS) and Public Service Accountability Monitoring (PSAM) initiatives at all administrative levels. Secondly, supporting farmers in wealth creation endeavors encompassing ecological agriculture, collaborative marketing, farmer-managed seed systems, land tenure security, and trade facilitation. Thirdly, integrating Climate Change adaptation, HIV/AIDS response, gender equality, and youth engagement within ESAFF activities. Lastly, focusing on the institutional development of both ESAFF members and the ESAFF Regional Office.”

ESAFF Annual Report 2021

The year 2020/21 was a remarkable year for ESAFF and 16 member organisations in the Eastern and Southern Africa region. Despite the challenges brought by COVID-19, the organization managed to implement planned activities while adhering to COVID-19 guidelines. We worked with many partners at national and regional levels to influence the African agriculture agenda for the benefit of smallholder farmers.

ESAFF partnered with like-minded organizations, research institutions, and academia to conduct research on the impacts of COVID-19 on the political economy of African food systems. This focused on major markets in Tanzania, South Africa, and Ghana. The findings show that smallholder farmers were affected by the pandemic, food flow in the markets was low, buyers were few, and there was an insufficient supply of agricultural inputs (such as fertilizers), leading to a sharp increase in prices.
