African stakeholders call for more recommendations to Heads of State

African non state actors working in the Agriculture sector in the continent have issued joint recommendations to be presented to the Africa Agriculture Ministers during their Conference for adoption. The same recommendation will be transmitted to the Heads of State Summit in July 2014.
According to a statement issued on behalf of the NSA team by David David Adama, citizens and CSOs are asked to put forward any suggestion on language as well as text of the joint recommendations to ensure they capture the demands of African farmers and civil society.
The statement says CSOs can track inputs and comments and send back through E-mail to: David.Adama@actionaid.org by Friday 7th March 2014 to enable the team to collate the inputs.
The measure is to ensure that CSOs and farmer groups in Africa present stronger, viable and more comprehensive recommendations to the Africa Agriculture Ministers during their Conference for adoption and then transmission to the Heads of State Summit in July 2014.
The recommendations were developed by African CSOs during the high level preparatory meeting held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in January 2014. The same document was presented to the African Union Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture Madam Rhoda PeaceTumusiime for onward transmission to the Heads of States.
In 2003, African Heads of States in Maputo made a commitment and declaration to invest at least 10% of their national budget on agriculture. Ten years on, only 8 out of 54 member States have met this commitment consistently. Several reports have shown that African governments still allocate an average of only 5 per cent of their national budgets to agriculture.
“Recognising that African Heads of State and Government have designated 2014 as a Year of Agriculture and Food Security, Citizens of Africa are called to engage leaders and demand a change of attitude and move From Rhetoric to Action and ensure that the Year of Agriculture brings in some tangible achievement and recommitment” the statement said.
