By NYASA TIMES: 21\u00a0July 2009<\/div>\nNorway\u2019s Yara Foundation says a Malawian farmers\u2019 group and \u00a0a Kenyan banker have won its annual prize promoting former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan\u2019s call for a green revolution in Africa.<\/div>\nThe foundation says the National Smallholder Farmers\u2019 Association of Malawi \u00a0and \u00a0Kenya\u2019s Equity Bank chairman Peter Munga will share the award honoring \u201csignificant contributions to the reduction of hunger and poverty in Africa.\u201d<\/div>\nThe foundation said Tuesday the 2009 prize recognizes Malawi association\u2019s promotion of \u201cfarming as a viable business among smallholder farmers\u201d and Munga\u2019s \u201cdedication to the unbanked poor\u201d in his homeland.<\/div>\nNASFAM has been equally dynamic, bringing together farmers, providing the necessary extension services and promoting farming as a viable business among smallholder farmers \u2013 most of whom are women.<\/div>\nThe organisation\u2019s\u00a0 work has been credited with playing a key role in achieving Malawi\u2019s recent progress. It has given farmers an effective voice in policy negotiations, built their commercial capacity, catalyzed the development of a successful agricultural commodity exchange and promoted the use of sustainable agricultural practices.<\/div>\n\u201cMaking progress against some of the world\u2019s most ambitious development goals starts with the smallholder farmer.
